Description:

The Bachelor's programme "Social Sciences for Intercultural Relations" (BASIB) qualifies students for intercultural and international careers. The interdisciplinary programme includes the subjects of sociology, political science, communication science and law, each with a focus on inter- and transcultural relations.

The course can be taken in German and/or English and is complemented by foreign language tuition. In addition to training in social science methods, aspects of diversity and intercultural communication are addressed in workshops, lectures and excursions. Students have the opportunity to spend a semester abroad.

A range of funding opportunities are available, including scholarships and councelling. The programme provides students with interdisciplinary and intercultural skills. This enables them to work in national and international organisations, public authorities, companies and non-profit organisations.

Admission is restricted, meaning that applicants must meet specific requirements to be considered.

The application deadline is July 15, so prospective students should ensure they submit their materials on time.

Why choose this programme?

The university studies programme is aimed at prospective students:

  • who would like to understand social and political contexts
  • who would like to work in an intercultural field
  • for whom socially appropriate communication is important
  • who would like to acquire basic legal knowledge
  • who want to develop a critical view of migration, social participation and interculturality
  • who enjoy learning foreign languages
  • who are interested in the diversity of human experiences and lifestyles
  • who want to organise intercultural encounters competently and creatively.

How is the programme structured?

The university studies are interdisciplinary. It comprises the subjects of sociology and political science as well as law and communication studies, with a special focus on intercultural relations. The programme lasts six semesters. An internship of at least eight weeks is completed after the fourth semester in an institution relevant to university studies and professional life - preferably abroad. It is also possible to study abroad for one semester.

After this, students can choose between the specialisations "Migration and Diversity", "Work and Interculturality in Organisations" or "Globalisation and Sustainable Development". Other subject areas that are taught include:

  • current topics in the social sciences
  • Diversity and gender studies
  • European integration and globalisation
  • Communication and digitisation in the profession
  • Methods of empirical social research
  • foreign languages

The internship phase during the university holidays between the 4th and 5th semester is an integral part of the curriculum. The aim is to acquire practical experience in a field relevant to the degree programme. Students should gain knowledge about the tasks and activities of the placement provider and develop perspectives for further university studies and later professional appointments. In principle, the internship can be completed in Germany or abroad.

Specialisations:

Students of the Master's programme in Social Sciences with specialisation in intercultural relations can choose the following specialisations

  • Migration and Diversity
  • Work and interculturality in organisations
  • Globalisation and sustainable development
