Learn to manage socio-technical change processes in the environment, energy and water domains.
Making the world more resilient and sustainable is an urgent, yet complex task. Our global community is struggling with climate change, pollution and degradation of ecosystems, and increasing economic and social inequality. What does it take to organise, manage, and lead socio-technical change towards solving these global challenges? How can we keep our economy viable without exceeding the carrying capacity of ecosystems and infrastructures? That’s what the Master’s in Environmental & Energy Management (MEEM) is all about.
This Master’s in Environmental & Energy Management, offered in Leeuwarden, will help you become a change agent at the interface between social, technological, and ecological systems. With a focus on social science disciplines such as management, public policy, governance, and law, you will learn to tackle challenges in the field of energy, water, and environmental management. This Master’s covers themes like sustainable development, resilience, circular economy, social entrepreneurship, environmental quality, and technological innovation – from the perspective of both developed and developing countries.
Are you a dreamer, or a doer? If you identify with the latter, you have come to the right place! As a student, you will work on real-life, tangible challenges, with a hands-on approach. So, more than wanting to ‘make the world a better place’ we’d like you to think: what specific challenges would you like to take on? What specific leads for change can you find, and what kind of knowledge and skills do you need? This combined focus on thinking and doing is at the heart of this Master’s.
Within MEEM, you get to focus on a specific domain of sustainability, by choosing one of the three specialisations. Your choice determines which domain you will focus on during the case study project and master’s thesis in your second semester. Whichever specialisation you choose: you will also develop solid expertise in the areas of the other specialisations as well, as these are highly interconnected.
A combination of stricter governmental regulations, growing public awareness and increasing corporate social responsibility has raised the demand for specialists in the field of environmental, energy and water management, and this demand is still expected to grow. That is why, as a graduate of this Master’s, you can look forward to great career prospects, both in the Netherlands and abroad.
Whether you want to become a manager at an energy company, a policy adviser at a governmental organisation, an environmental strategist at a multinational, a consultant at an environmental agency or a project manager at the United Nations: there’s a great variety of career paths you can follow. Some graduates even went on to start up their own business, like a fairtrade cacao company! Or you could pursue an academic career and follow your Master’s with a PhD.
