Description:

Become a mathematical problem-solver, able to tackle a great variety of challenging issues in areas from healthcare to technology to logistics.

How can you accurately predict the sea level rise due to climate change? What happens in your brain when an epileptic seizure occurs? How can imaging techniques be improved to detect diseases faster? And how can you accelerate the development of computer chips, or minimise traffic jams? Answering any of these questions will be virtually impossible without in-depth, mathematical knowledge. After all, mathematics is often referred to as the universal language of science.

If you’re eager to deepen your understanding of mathematics in order to tackle challenging issues in the most diverse sectors, the Master’s in Applied Mathematics at the University of Twente might just be the right choice for you.

Why study mathematics?

In this Master’s, you will learn how to discover new patterns and how to predict them through mathematical models. Mathematics is commonly misperceived as something static; in reality, it is continually evolving. And the great thing about this Master’s is that you will be the one developing mathematics further. In that sense, this Master’s is not about applying mathematics, but about developing mathematics in order to apply it.

It means that you will develop mathematical models and solutions with a strong view to societal and industrial challenges. From modelling veins in the human body to search for causes of heart failure, predicting crime rates for different cities, creating mathematical models for designing more energy-efficient chips, to determining the most suitable location for a new fire station; you will be able to contribute to meaningful solutions using your in-depth mathematical knowledge.

Choose a specialisation:

You have the freedom to tailor your Master’s in Applied Mathematics to your own interests and ambitions.

At the start of the Master’s, you will choose a specialisation. Your choice determines a part of the courses you will take and the type of research you will engage in during your master’s thesis. You can choose one of the following specialisations:

  • Mathematical Analysis, Geometry, Numerics & Systems
  • Mathematics of Data Science
  • Mathematics of Operations Research

Career perspectives:

After obtaining your master’s you will have plenty of job opportunities to choose from.

You could opt for a career in healthcare, e.g. using mathematics to improve capacity management, diagnostics, or employing mathematical neuroscience models to better understand how the human nervous system works.

You could also work in the media industry, applying deep learning networks to achieve better social network filtering, use your knowledge of algorithms and machine learning to create models for predicting earthquakes, or supporting the energy transition.

You might also pursue a career in optimisation in various fields, ranging from business to societal and environmental services.

Of course, you can also choose to first expand your specialist knowledge base by pursuing a PhD or EngD programme as offered by the UT’s Twente Graduate School (TGS).
