The relationship between the environment, natural resources, and the agri-food system plays a central role in the development of modern societies. The issues related to sustainable economic development, to the management of natural and energy resources, and to the sustainability of the agricultural and food system represent new economic and policy challenges.
The Master degree in Environmental and Food Economics provides advanced expertise in economic and management disciplines, quantitative methods, and specific theoretical and applied knowledge in environmental and natural resources economics and in the economics and management of the agri-food system.
The aim is to provide advanced knowledge and instruments for the promotion of sustainable development, climate change adaptation and mitigation, natural resources management (water, soil, energy), environmental, energy, and agri-food policy analyses, innovation in the agri-food sector, internationalisation of agri-food companies, food security and rural development.
The Master degree in Environmental and Food Economics is organized in two curricula: Environmental and Energy Economics; Economics and Management of the Agri-Food System.
The professional profiles that characterize the two curricula can be summarized as follows.
The Environmental and Energy Economics profile is more oriented to the world of private and public institutions, the green economy and consulting activities with job opportunities in national, EU, and international institutions, public administration, Energy Authorities, Energy company, FAO, OECD, European Commission, private research organisations, consulting firms and research department of large national and multinational companies.
The Economics and Management of the Agri-food System profile is more oriented to the world of private business with job opportunities in agri-food companies such as small and medium enterprises, multinationals, and global retailers, as well as national, EU, and international institutions that carry out research in agriculture and climate change, food security policies, like the FAO, World Bank, OECD, and European Institutions.

To attend the Master programme in Environmental and Food Economics it is necessary to have adequate knowledge of mathematics, economics and statistics at undergraduate level. Applicants with an Italian degree (ex. DM 270/04 or equivalent ex. DM 509/99) from one of the following classes: economics and management; political and social science; agricultural, food and environmental science; geography, engineering; mathematics; life science and related subject. Students from undergraduate classes other than the above listed and students with foreign qualification can enrol to the course after positive judgement of the Collegio Didattico or its ad hoc committee.
Mathematics, Quantitative Methods and Economics background
The minimum requirements to be admitted to the course are:
Students who do not fully satisfy the above prerequisites can fulfil them by attending crash courses in the above disciplines, which will be held starting from the end of August.
Foreign bachelor degree
Students with foreign qualification are expected to meet the substantive requirements equivalent to the minimum ones for students with an Italian title. The check of the prerequisites will be managed by a special committee of faculties appointed by the Collegio Didattico.
English language proficiency
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
Students who do not meet any of the requirements listed in points 1, 2 and 3 must have a B2 level or higher in English, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). All students who meet the above requirements are admitted and invited to an interview (in English language). The interview, which can be done remotely via electronic devices if needed, is aimed at verifying the motivation of the candidates, the above-mentioned skills and the knowledge of the English language.
Each applicant must submit the application for admission, a letter of motivation and at least one letter of recommendation (only for foreign students).
In line with the nature of the course, international mobility is very desirable. Students enrolled on the course may spend a study period abroad under the ERASMUS+ program (take courses, take exams, prepare theses, carry out research) obtaining recognition for their academic career from the educational experience.
Erasmus+ also provides Placements, that is, the opportunity for a traineeship in companies and other organisations abroad. The new Erasmus+ program provides the following new study and placement opportunities: a) 12 months abroad (study periods and placements); b) placements, including for new graduates (within 12 months of completing a degree). Students who have already studied or had a placement abroad may apply to Erasmus+ nevertheless remembering that the possible total of 12 months for each Erasmus+ study cycle include the months previously spent abroad.
