The Master's degree programme in BioGeosciences: Ecosystems Analysis and Science Communication aims to provide in-depth interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary knowledge of structural and functional ecosystem components in past and present natural environments, to outline conceptual instruments for environmental conservation and management, to provide knowledge and methodologies for dissemination, communication and education in the natural sciences.
The programme is tailored for those who wish to expand and deepen their knowledge of the natural sciences in an equilibrated fashion, maintaining the traditional equilibrium between abiological and biological, so as to achieve a coherent overall understanding of nature and its problems. The Master's degree programme is also suited to those who wish to embark on careers in the field of natural sciences education and communication.
Graduates will acquire the ability to survey and monitor natural biotic and abiotic components of the environment, disseminate knowledge on present natural ecosystems, as well as those in the geological past, operate in environmental education, set up exhibitions regarding the natural environment, and increase awareness of sustainable development.
They will find employment in the public sector: schools, universities, research centres (CNR, ENEA), businesses involved in environmental management and services, Ministries, ISPRA, ARPA, the Italian National Institute of Health (ISS), Experimental Stations, the Superintendence for Archaeological Heritage. They may also be employed in the private sector: businesses, companies and cooperatives offering consultation and enabling the fruition of the natural environment.
They may provide assistance to Regional, Provincial and Municipal Administrations, to Mountain Communities, Environmental Groups, Foundations operating in the management of environmental issues, and in the scientific publishing sector and education. Graduates are suitably prepared to take part in competitions for qualifying as a professor in secondary schools, in accordance with current legislation.
Application and admission: Open, subject to completion of self-assessment test prior to enrolment.
Students must have level B2 proficiency in English. Proficiency may be certified at the time of matriculation by submitting a certificate of level B2 language proficiency or better, or by sitting the SLAM (University Language Centre) placement test during the first year of studies only, between September and December.
Students who do not pass the test must follow the SLAM language courses and obtain appropriate certification within the year the plan of study calls for a language exam.
Within the ERASMUS+ programme, students enrolled on the Master's Degree Programme in BioGeosciences: analysis of ecosystem and science communication can benefit from agreements signed with French, Swiss and Romanian universities. During their period abroad, students can take courses and the relevant exams, or carry out research activities for their degree thesis. Students admitted to the mobility programme must submit a study plan listing the educational activities to be carried out abroad, with the relevant CFU credits. The number of credits in the plan should approximately equal the number of credits that the student would achieve during the same period of time at the University of Milan.
The proposed activities, chosen from the range of options available at the host university, must be consistent with the degree programme's training project. The proposed plan must be submitted to the Erasmus commission of the Interdepartmental Academic Board for approval. At the end of the mobility programme, in accordance with the University guidelines, the exams listed in the approved study plan and passed by the student will be recorded in the student career log under the original name of the course in the foreign university. The relevant ECTS credits will be converted into CFU credits, with grades out of 30.
