Environmental Chemistry and Toxicology addresses the impact of chemicals in our ecosystems, focusing on their interactions, risks, and management. By examining both natural and anthropogenic chemical processes, students will gain the expertise to tackle issues such as pollution, toxic spills, and regulatory compliance.
This track is ideal for students with a keen interest in combining laboratory research and fieldwork to solve environmental challenges.

This study track is one of nine available. To learn more about all the study tracks, visit: Master’s Programme in Transdisciplinary Studies of Climate, Environment and Energy.

What to expect:

The programme emphasises:

  • Chemical analysis: Training in advanced techniques for monitoring environmental pollutants.
  • Risk assessment: Developing skills to evaluate chemical hazards and propose mitigation strategies.
  • Ethical perspectives: Understanding the regulatory and ethical considerations of chemical safety.

Core modules include Risk Assessment and Regulation of Chemicals, Environmental Biogeochemistry, and Toxicology for Environmental Scientists.

Participating universities:

This study track connects students with three leading institutions:

  1. Stockholm University (Sweden): Laying the foundation with a transdisciplinary perspective on climate, energy, and environment, as well as providing knowledge on the toxicology and risk assessment frameworks of chemicals, and training in laboratory and field work.
  2. Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen (Germany): Specialising in analytical chemistry and toxicology.
  3. University of Bucharest (Romania): Offering opportunities for master’s thesis research in environmental chemistry and toxicology.

Through this track, students will gain a robust skill set to address global chemical and environmental challenges.

Programme overview:

The Master's Programme in Transdisciplinary Studies of Climate, Environment and Energy (TRACEE programme) is a two-year Master's Programme, meaning 4 semesters and totally 120 ECTS.

After the first common semester you continue on your selected study track. Students choose from nine specialised tracks (60 ECTS) offered across the 11 CIVIS member universities. Read more about the programme and all the nine study tracks on the main programme page here. This page describes track 1 out of 9.

In the study track in Environmental Chemistry and Toxicology, Students will focus on evaluation and solution of problems in the environment related to chemicals. Apart from theoretical studies, this study track also involves laboratory training in both chemistry and toxicology as well as field work where students will be trained in relevant sampling techniques. The Study Track aims for a comprehensive understanding of the linkages between physical, chemical, and biological process mechanisms. Students from various science backgrounds will learn to qualitatively and quantitatively address complex processes in soils, water and air as well as in organisms. In addition, students will address the ethical, legal, and regulatory frameworks governing environmental protection, chemical safety, and toxicology and to evaluate environmental risks based on multi-disciplinary approaches.
