Description:

The Doctor of Philosophy in Network Science at CEU is a research-oriented program that offers rigorous training in theoretical and computational methods, foundational coursework on the principles and theories of complex networks, and hands-on experience with large datasets.

Students focus on related fields such as mathematics, sociology, political science, or environmental science, and apply relational analysis to explore the complexities of social, economic, political, and cultural phenomena through the lens of network science. Real-life case studies and interdisciplinary research techniques are used to develop insights and formulate policy-relevant recommendations. Students are encouraged to integrate network science methodologies — including data mining, analytics and modeling — into their independent doctoral research, and to participate actively in thematically related international research collaborations.

Launched in 2015, the PhD in Network Science at CEU was the first doctoral-level program of its kind in Europe. This interdisciplinary, data-driven program has since educated a new generation of academics and professionals equipped with advanced theoretical and practical knowledge of network science.

How the Doctor of Philosophy Works:

During the first year, you will focus on mandatory coursework that builds theoretical, mathematical and computational skills, alongside hands-on experience with large datasets and participation in international research projects. You will also define the topic of your doctoral research, which may involve applying network science across the social sciences (e.g., economics, political science, environmental studies) or contributing to the theory of complex networks. Regular participation in the Research Colloquia is required, where students across all cohorts present their research and dissertation chapters to receive feedback.   Academic writing support is available in the spring, during the proposal development phase. You will prepare for the comprehensive exam, typically taken in the spring term of the first year. By the end of year one, you must submit a detailed research proposal outlining:

  • central research questions and objectives
  • literature review of prior work and relevant methodologies
  • theoretical framework guiding the research
  • data requirements and novelty of the proposed work

Successfully completing these requirements formally admits you to PhD candidacy.

Who Is This Program For:

The PhD program in Network Science at CEU is designed for aspiring researchers committed to the highest standards of academic excellence. Students engage deeply with the theoretical and methodological foundations of network science while gaining extensive hands-on experience in working with large datasets.

This program sits at the forefront of network research, drawing on CEU’s strong interdisciplinary environment, existing research directions, and institutional resources. Doctoral students are encouraged to pursue collaborations with both international and local universities and research institutes, contributing to the growth of the European network and complexity science community. Their work addresses a wide range of real-world challenges involving social, physical, and biological networks, with practical applications in both the public and private sectors.

Graduates benefit from CEU’s strong ties to the international network science community, gaining access to academic and professional opportunities through established partnerships and collaborative research networks.
