The Master’s Programme in Area and Cultural Studies combines perspectives from the humanities and social sciences to build deep expertise in cultures and societies. We explore the globe, past and present, and give you the tools to thrive in an internationally connected world.
What does it mean to truly understand a world region? This programme is designed for the globally curious and outward-looking. You can focus on a specific region: Asia, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, the Middle East, North America—or go beyond borders with Transcultural studies. Engage with key questions of identity, power, media, religion and history, in dialogue with an international community of scholars and fellow students. Along the way, you will develop critical, analytical and communication skills.
More than just a degree: Your interests. Your questions. Your future.
The Master's Programme in Area and Cultural Studies is a two-year, full-time programme. You will explore themes of culture, identity, decolonisation, global and regional change in lectures, essays, projects, seminars, group work, and through independent research in your thesis.
In practice, a typical day might involve a seminar discussion on decolonisation in the morning and a group workshop analysing media representations in the afternoon. The programme culminates in your Master's thesis, allowing you to pursue an original research question in your chosen area of specialisation.
On graduation, you will have these competences:
A strong grounding in area and cultural studies and your chosen region
The ability to analyse complex cultural and societal phenomena across regional and global contexts
Tools to connect local realities to broader global processes
Solid research skills, from methodology to academic writing
Clear and confident communication in academic and professional contexts
Graduates work in roles that require cultural, linguistic and regional expertise—analysing policy, coordinating international projects and advising organisations across sectors.
Typical employers include ministries, NGOs, international organisations, media, universities, museums and cultural institutions as well as global companies.
Your studies include a professional-skills component that connects academic learning to working life through practical projects, career courses and internships. Internship opportunities are also available abroad.
The programme also provides a strong foundation for doctoral studies, including the Doctoral Programme in the Humanities at the University of Helsinki.
Career Services at the University of Helsinki offers career counselling, workshops and access to career portals. Finnish language courses are available for international students, as local language skills open up further career options.
You choose one of the six study tracks when you apply to the programme. Each track offers 30 credits of specialised courses that give you deep knowledge of your chosen region or a transcultural perspective.
