Description:

This programme focuses on the application of biomedical processes in a wide range of sectors, such as biotechnology, food, environment and pharmaceutics. You become familiar with all kinds of techniques for monitoring biological processes: recombinant DNA-techniques, immunological, molecular and micro-biological detection and identification techniques, chemical analysis techniques, etc. Throughout your education, you will acquire the scientific and technical knowledge necessary to handle and to manage these processes in a business environment.

About the programme:

The master's programme in Biochemical Engineering Technology incorporates knowledge from various industries (food, biomedical, pharmaceutical, environmental, etc.) to provide a well-rounded graduate-level curriculum in biochemical engineering.

In addition to fundamental (bio)chemical-scientific course units, you will take courses in socio-economics (company management, economics) and biotechnology (engineering, separation techniques, fermentation technology, molecular biology techniques, industrial biochemistry and microbiology, environmental technology, bioreactor design, etc.).

A flexible cross-campus elective package and a master's thesis conducted in either a research-specific or an industrial context enable you to focus your studies according to your specific interests and career goals.

Option Medical Bioengineering:

This option relates to biotechnological developments in the medical sector. Knowledge of human physological systems and medical engineering techniques constitute the basis of developments in the area of artificial organs, tissue engineering, biomaterials, bioelectronics and new diagnostic techniques.

Option Applied Microbiology and Biotechnology:

This option focuses on the use of microbiological and molecular (DNA-based) techniques to monitor and control desired and undesired microorganisms in various industrial processes. Examples include bio-ethanol production, malt production, food production and processing, water treatment and the use of biocontrol to beat plant diseases.

Student profile:

  • You are fascinated by science and technology and want to put your theoretical knowledge into practice.

  • You are innovative, creative and entrepreneurial.

  • You are fascinated by the capabilities of bacteria and yeasts and you want to know how these micro-organisms can be used in industrial processes.

  • You want to know how biotechnological processes, such as the brewing of beer or the production of bioethanol, work.

  • You are interested in microbiology or enzyme technology.

  • You want to know more about the various functions that microorganisms can perform.

Tuition fees:

It is worth noting that our tuition fees are cheaper than in many other European countries thanks to the generous financing of the higher education system by our government. Although all of our programmes are very affordable compared to equivalent universities around the world, the fees for any individual student are contingent upon their choice of academic programme and the nationality of the student.

Scholarships

Our aim is to offer affordable tuition fees for all students, which means we only have a limited number of scholarships available for students from particular backgrounds or studying in particular fields.

Career perspectives:

As a master in Engineering Technology, you are prepared to take advantage of a whole world of opportunities. Masters in Engineering Technology are active in the most diverse positions, professions and sectors all over the world. They are the engine of innovation in business and society. Masters in Biochemical Technology have a wide range of career opportunities, be it as a biotechnologist, biochemical analyst, biocatalysis expert, engineer brewing technology, forensic researcher, nutrition engineer, pharmaceutical engineer, quality assurance engineer, ...
