Do you have a background in computer science (or related field) and love multidisciplinary challenges? Apply your technical and problem-solving skills to the most complex issues in the auto industry – including autonomous vehicles and climate change. You can help the auto industry transition to a green and circular economy by using advanced digital technologies. At University West, you’ll gain expertise in Artificial Intelligence (AI), human-AI interaction, connected vehicles ecosystems and more. This one-year programme is fully English-taught and designed in partnership with industry. Vehicles have become increasingly digitalised and automated. Modern cars are in fact complex distributed computing systems that can now run an increasing part of the driving itself.
An autonomous vehicle (AV) can transport people or goods without input from a human driver, often on ordinary roads. AVs are also known as self-driving cars, driverless cars, or robotic cars. Thanks to rapid development, AVs will hit the market very soon. University West is partnering with several companies developing AVs, such as NEVS.
Advances in gathering huge datasets from vehicle-embedded sensors and analysing that data using powerful AI methods is the foundation for AV development. Such methods are now expanding their scope beyond a specific vehicle to wirelessly and invisibly share and analyse data in collaboration with other vehicles and services in the cloud.
Why does it matter?
To master the areas of importance for autonomous vehicles, many skills are needed. Although it is a multi-disciplinary programme, its focus is on software-related system design challenges, and it has been designed for students with a background in computer science, software engineering or information technology.

The entire programme has been built on the strength of a close collaboration between industry and University West. You’ll gain practical experience through assignments as well as group and individual projects in close collaboration with corporate leaders. Every aspect is based on the real hiring needs of companies and research facilities in the industry.
During the thesis period of your programme, you’ll specialise in an area related to software development for autonomous vehicles through an individual project you design and document in collaboration with industry.
