The Master of Science in Risk Management at the University of Stavanger offers a strong academic basis for future work within risk management in the offshore industry as well as other industries such as the business sector – particularly the oil industry, banking/finance, infrastructure, transport, food and health and the societal sector.
The risk management field embraces principles, models and methods for identifying, analyzing, describing, communicating and managing risk.
The principal aim of the study program is to give the students the knowledge and basic thinking they require to approach risk and uncertainty to support decision-making. Topics covered include: What is the meaning of risk? How to express risk and uncertainty? How to analyze reliability and availability? How to give weight to uncertainties? How to understand and apply the precautionary principle? How to determine acceptable risk? How to balance different concerns, such as safety and economics? How to apply cost-benefit and cost effectiveness analyses? How to apply expected values in risk management?
The MSc programme has a strong international profile with applications from students worldwide.
The coursework consists of lectures, project assignments and obligatory and voluntary exercises.
The master thesis may be prepared either at the faculty or in cooperation with industry. The department has good contacts with different companies in the region.
