Description:

Explore and develop your passion for the visual and performing arts on our joint honours degree in Drama and Film. Our programme puts you on track for a successful career in the creative industries.

Kent's School of Arts is well-known for its innovative programmes in the visual arts. As an arts student, you become part of an artistic community based within the School of Arts’ Jarman building – a creative hub for students of art history, film, drama and media studies.

Most of our modules incorporate an exciting blend of practical work and academic study allowing you to develop your critical understanding alongside your performance and production skills.

Our degree programme

You begin with an introduction to theories of performance studies that also includes practical workshops. In addition, you are introduced to the study of film by focusing on style, genre and history.

During all stages of your study, you have a wide range of modules to choose from, covering everything from documentary cinema and screenwriting to Shakespeare’s theatre and stand-up comedy.

In your final year, you have the opportunity to complete an independent research or practice-based project on a subject of your choice. This allows you to focus on a topic you are particularly passionate about.

Study resources

As a drama student you benefit from our excellent facilities in the School of Arts including:

  • the Aphra Theatre, 113 seat courtyard-type gallery theatre space
  • the Lumley Theatre, a flexible and adaptable white room space
  • a rehearsal studio
  • a sound studio
  • a theatre design suite.

Facilities to support film theory include:

  • our own cinema, which screens ten to 15 films a week
  • 8,000 DVDs and videos in the library
  • individual and group viewing facilities in the library.

Our film production facilities are industry-standard and include the following:

  • soundproofed production studio with projection, chroma-key green screen and black serge cycloramas
  • extensive lighting grid
  • sound-dubbing studio
  • individual edit suites equipped with Final Cut Pro
  • digital studio with post-production software.

Kent’s Templeman Library also gives you access to a wide range of topical journals and books in hard copy and digital format.

Your designated academic advisor provides guidance for your academic and professional development throughout your studies.

Extra activities

The School of Arts puts on many special events, which you are welcome to attend. In previous years, these have included symposia, seminars, conferences and exhibitions.

There are also a number of student-led societies at Kent which you may want to join, for example:

  • Film Society
  • B-Movie Society
  • Stand Up Comedy Society
  • T24 Drama Society.

The Gulbenkian, our campus arts-centre, has two large cinemas and screens block-busters as well as independent art films. It also holds regular events that might be of interest to you such as roundtables with directors and screenwriters.
