The MSc in Health and Social Care Studies is suitable for a wide range of professionals involved in the provision and delivery of a changing and expanding health and social care agenda. Increasingly, practitioners are being called upon to lead change within their organisation, on both clinical and strategic fronts. This course will:

  • Provide an opportunity to respond to emerging career pathways allowing you to tailor your learning needs in a flexible and creative way.

The programme team are aware that health and social care professionals are required to have a wide range of specific and transferable skills; this course offers you the diversity and flexibility that will help you develop these skills. It will cover a broad range of specialist and general modules that have been developed to reflect the increasingly diverse and changing roles within the health care sector, and the need to extend the skills of the people who work within it.

This course is ideal if you are undertaking continuing professional development beyond professional registration, but wish to attain a Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma, or MSc.There are several modules to choose from, so you can tailor the course to suit your learning needs and professional career aspirations. You can study specific awards or take standalone modules as part of your professional development. Many of the modules are available through distance learning, so you can study at a time and place to suit you.

To achieve the Postgraduate Certificate, you’ll need to study the equivalent of three 20 credit modules. For the Postgraduate Diploma, you’ll study the equivalent of six 20 credit modules and for the MSc in Health and Social Care Studies, you’ll study the equivalent of nine 20 credit modules in total. There is great flexibility in the modules you choose and you can also study modules from other courses such as the MSc Advanced Practice or Postgraduate Certificate Interprofessional Practice Education. As your role changes, you may wish to create a bespoke pathway of study that reflects your personal and professional aspirations. The modules currently included within the course are structured around the skills a modern health and social care practitioner requires. The underpinning themes for the development of these skills include specialist clinical practice, educational, leadership and research based modules.

A potential student journey may be diverse and incorporate prior learning. For example, you may have completed and been awarded a PG Certificate in Inter-professional Practice Education and wish to continue your studies to a full masters award. Rather than start your studies from scratch, you may be able to incorporate your PG Certificate and study additional modules to achieve an MSc. There will be restrictions regarding the inclusion of your previous studies or awards based on timeframes and accreditation regulations of the University.

Alternatively, you may have commenced a specialist clinical module which was appropriate to your clinical role at the time. Your role may change and you are now required to lead change and improve your service provision. You will be able to combine your clinical specialist studies with your future studies, to contribute to your MSc.

As we need a minimum number of students before we can offer some modules, not all of them run every year, so please check before you apply.
