Specialisation in Bilingualism

Bilingualism is a cross-disciplinary field of research connecting the areas such as linguistics, sociology, social anthropology, and cognitive psychology. The Master’s Programme in Language Science with a Specialisation in Bilingualism provides a comprehensive two-year course of study of core areas in Bilingualism, aiming to develop and deepen your knowledge of bi- and multilingualism at both the individual and societal level. The compulsory courses in this specialization cover different aspects of topics including second language acquisition and bilingual development in children and adults, age effects in second language acquisition, bilingualism and memory, communication and linguistic diversity, Swedish as a second language in children and adults, multiethnic youth language, attitudes towards languages/language varieties, bilingual education, second and foreign language teaching, language attrition in bilinguals, language ideology, language politics, and transnational multilingualism. The education also includes compulsory courses that are common to the whole programme as well as optional courses, aiming at extending and deepening your knowledge in language science, as well as at strengthening your grasp of research methodology, research ethics and your ability to carry out scientific reasoning. The programme ends with a 30-credit degree project where you, with the assistance of a supervisor, design and conduct a scientific investigation addressing an issue in the field of Bilingualism. Providing advanced knowledge and skills in the language sciences, the programme may serve as preparation for PhD studies in Bilingualism, or for a professional career in connection with language.
