European and Nordic Studies | Master’s programme

Europe – why does it matter?

European and Nordic studies (ENS) is an interdisciplinary master’s programme that takes you on a deep dive into current European and Nordic politics, societies, and cultures. It is intended for students who want to explore European issues and phenomena from various angles and understand the roots of current developments.

Finland and Helsinki are particularly fascinating places to study Europe. Recent developments have changed the geopolitical and security landscape and Northern Europe’s position in it. Wider global trends, such as the challenges posed by societal and political inequalities and climate change mitigation, shape politics and societies across Europe.

The programme has two study tracks. Depending on your choice of track, you will graduate with either a Master of Arts or a Master of Social Science degree.

The programme trains you to become a critical and independent thinker who has the necessary skills and knowledge to analyse and engage with current European and Nordic issues.

This programme is right for you if you:

  • appreciate a possibility to develop your own specialization
  • want to learn to look at Europe and EU from various angles
  • are interested in regional approaches, and especially Nordic societies and cultures
