Description:

The Master of Science in Nanotechnology Engineering is designed to offer an advanced scientific and professional education focused on analysis, design, simulation and optimization of devices, materials and processes, all based on the use of nanotechnologies for several applications in the field of Industrial Engineering, ranging from energy production and storage to aeronautics, nano-mechanics, catalysis, electronics and theranostics.

The course guarantees a highly interdisciplinary approach together with extensive laboratory activities developed to provide high skills. The aim of the course is to provide basic and advanced knowledge on:

  • management and use of micro- and nano- technologies for materials, biotechnologies and manufacturing processes of micro and nano-devices;
  • design with atomistic simulation methods of micro-nano devices for functional and multifunctional applications;
  • design and management of complex micro- and nano-systems;
  • risk and safety management in the use of nanotechnologies.

The Program (for a total of 120 CFU) is organized into two alternative paths: the first one where most of the courses are taught in Italian (path A) and the second one with all the courses taught in English (path B).
The program includes:

  • 8 mandatory courses (72 CFU)
  • 1 course (6 CFU) to be selected among a group of alternative teachings
  • 2 free-choice courses (12 CFU)
  • Other activities aimed at preparing students for careers after graduation (1 CFU)
  • Final Thesis preparation and defence (17 CFU)

1 CFU is the Italian equivalent of ECTS (European Credit Transfer System): 1 CFU = 25 hours of study (10 hours of lectures + 15 hours of homework)

For the preparation of their final thesis, the students will have the possibility to attend one of the numerous fully equipped laboratories (e.g. SNN lab) in which the professors lead different research activities, thus facing real experimental work.

Moreover, the most brilliant students will have access to the excellence program, which provides students with additional training activities.

Admission requirements

Admission to master’s degree programs in Nanotechnology Engineering requires a mastery of general scientific methods and knowledge of basic scientific disciplines, as well as in physics, chemistry and engineering, which must be considered preliminary to fully understand the contents of the most advanced classes.

Program content

The MS in Nanotechnology Engineering is one of the most interdisciplinary and complete courses nowadays, able to offer to student in-depth knowledge in different fields. Here are the main fields you will deepen during the course:

  • Chemistry for Nanotechnology
  • Modern Physics for Nanotechnology
  • Surface Engineering and Nanostructured Materials
  • Continuum Mechanics
  • Electron Microscopies and Related Techniques
  • Micro-nano fluidics
  • Micro-nano Devices and Materials for Electrical Electromagnetic Applications and Fundamentals
  • Nanoelectronic and Microelectromechanical Integrated Devices

The abilities described above will be acquired through a stimulating educational offer, focused on the following topics: nanofabrication techniques, processes of auto-assembling of nanostructures, surfaces engineering, methods of atomistic modelling of nanostructures, characterization techniques up till nanoscopic scale.

Students will have the opportunity to complete their individual study plan by selecting the courses that best suit their skills and goals. The MS in Nanotechnology Engineering also offers a variety of courses focused on techniques and methods of analysis and design of new materials and micro/nanostructured surfaces, multifunctional and intelligent, aimed at the realization of fluid, electric, electronic, electromagnetic, photonic or hybrid nano- and micro-mechanic devices, and to the development of flux-based and reagent-based microsystems aimed at the transportation, separation, purification and amplification of cellular and sub-cellular composites, microprobes and biocompatible materials for the recovering and rehabilitation of tissues and organs.

All these fields will be studied in a complex and transversal way, in order to provide the students with all the skills they need in KETs and nanotechnology. The learning approach is meant to provide future Nanotechnology Engineers with the ability to integrate the technical-scientific knowledge with contextual and horizontal competences and soft skills, including those communicative tools which are considered indispensable to operate in an international environment.

For the whole duration of the course, experimental and laboratorial activities will be offered extensively, so that students can ultimately develop a keen sensitivity for implementation and applicative problems and challenges.

Learning outcomes

The main objective of the master’s degree in Nanotechnology Engineering is training a new category of engineers able to manage the techniques required to manipulate matter at the micro- and nanoscale for conceiving, designing, realizing ad controlling devices, processes and systems operating at the microscopic level. These systems are characterized by functional parts acting at the nanoscale (nanometric scale, corresponding to millionths of a millimetre – the order of magnitude of the nanometer is ten times higher than the dimension of a hydrogen atom) that must be contained and organized in a controlled environment, typically constituted by devices at the micrometric scale (thousandths of a millimeter).

The course is mainly, but not exclusively, addressed to: students with a bachelor’s degree in industrial and electronic engineering; students with a bachelor’s degree in materials science, physics, and chemistry.

Enrolled students will enhance and integrate knowledge of the fundamental sciences and engineering skills, gaining at the same time specific competences related to the field of nanotechnologies.

Career Opportunities

Endowed with the ability to operate in an international and multidisciplinary context, the Nanotechnology Engineer will operate in several working environments, ranging from the manufacturing industry with a highly technological content applied to the different fields of engineering (mechanics, aerospace, automotive, transportations, advanced materials, electrotechnics, bioengineering, biomedical engineering, agri-food industry, production and transformation processes), including industries operating in the field of electronics.

Besides carrying out leadership tasks, the nanotechnology engineer is able to manage, coordinate and direct projects of great complexity, having acquired a significant ability to develop innovative methodologies and products. Moreover, the nanotechnology engineer has skills related to the design and control of complex micro and nano-systems, and he/she is able to solve problems rising from the use of micro and nanotechnologies.
Alternatively, graduates from the MSc in Nanotechnology Engineering can find employment as researchers in advanced research centres. On the base of the deep knowledge acquired in the core disciplines of industrial and electronic engineering, graduates can also take the exam to be included in the Italian register of engineers and subsequently be employed in the national private sector as qualified professionals.

In sum, the course is designed to develop the following professional profiles:

  • Nano and micro-technologies engineer
  • Product development engineer with a focus on macro and nano-materials and devices
  • Engineer specialized in the management and design of complex micro and nano-systems.
