Bachelor of Science Advanced Wood and sustainable Building Technology

Course Description

This course has been designed in partnership with industry to meet the needs of the ‘Green Economy’, which reports have projected to be a major area of employment within the Irish economy. This broad-based level 7 Degree programme emphasises the principles of construction and has a strong bias towards sustainable construction practices. It will equip you with practical Carpentry and Joinery skills and an in-depth knowledge of sustainable building technologies and materials, including the retrofitting / refurbishment of existing dwellings to achieve a low carbon design and the construction of new low-energy buildings. The course is delivered through lectures and practicals.

Application

Application should be made through the Central Applications Office at http://www.cao.ie/ or paper applications should be submitted to Central Applications Office, Tower House, Eglinton Street, Galway, from whom application packs are available.

Qualified carpenters are eligible for entry to year 2 and should complete the below Transfer Application Form and return by post.

Available Grants

Apprentices entering this programme in September 2013 who have been on the live register for nine months prior to the start of the programme may qualify for the Back to Education Allowance (BTEA) from the Department of Social Protection. Periods spent on apprentice training programmes are included in this nine month period. You are advised to contact your local social welfare office to confirm your entitlement. Should you not qualify for the BTEA, you may apply to your VEC for a Third Level Training Grant, as an alternative to the BTEA. In either case, you should also apply to your VEC for the payment of the Student Contribution to IT Sligo. You are advised to contact your VEC to confirm your entitlement in this instance also.
