The United Kingdom is famous for its universities: Every year, British institutions top the international rankings. The University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge usually secure the best ranks, regularly followed by Imperial College, UCL, and the London School of Economics. Such a remarkable track record explains why the UK was ranked #1 for Education in our 2017 Country Ranking. No wonder that so many international students want to study in the UK.
Our overview below shows the top universities in the United Kingdom. In the table, you can see the global rankings of British universities in the four leading international academic rankings: Times Higher Education Ranking (THE), QS World University Rankings, the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU, usually referred to as the “Shanghai Ranking”) and the US News Best Global Universities Ranking.

Out of the 30 universities, 26 are located in England, 4 in Scotland, and 1 in Wales.
Even beyond these top 30 institutions, the United Kingdom offers plenty of high-quality study options. There are well over 100 universities in the UK. A weakness of common academic rankings is that they tend to neglect a large number of universities that focus on practice-oriented education; often former polytechnics or young universities. With research a smaller priority to these schools, they do not always make it to the upper tiers of the international rankings, although they might offer an equally good education.
